Lake Norconian Club

A gathering at the Club. The Lake Norconian Club was built by architect Dwight Gibbs for Rex B. Clark in 1928. It was constructed over 700 acres and featured a lake, Olympic sized swimming pools, hot mineral baths, and even an airfield. Ornate ballrooms, stately rooms and elegant art contributed to the $4 million price tag of the Club, which was designed for the rich and famous. Celebrities such as Walt Disney, Bob Hope, and Johnny Weismueller vacationed at the Norconian. After the Great Depression, the Club could not afford to stay open, and days before the start of the Second World War, the Navy purchased the land and turned it into a naval hospital, where many veterans went to recuperate after the war.
