Surveyor's Box of Tools - Paper/Metal/Wood/Leather

This artifact is a land surveyor's measuring kit with a surveyor's transit that was used by Mr. Solano in the late 19th century into the 20th century in Riverside County to lay out roads.  The box measures 17 1/2" (L), 8 1/2" (W), and 5 1/4" (H).  (The surveyor's transit shown in the accompanying photograph fits in the surveyors box and when used is mounted on a surveyor's tripod--a separate artifact AAA.1116). Donor's Remarks:  Jim Plummer, the son of W. M. Plummer, received these surveyor's tools as a gift from Mr Solano who lived in Blythe, CA during the late 1920's and early 1930's.  Mr. Solano indicated that he had served as the first Captain of the California Calvery and had later worked for H. Clay Kellogg as a surveyor.
